Yang Tae-oh, a space designer who became a beauty creator
Space designer Yang Tae-oh becomes a beauty creator. The beautiful butterfly effect brought about by herbal tea that soothes sleepless nights.
Q. I always feel that your skin is really good. Is it natural?
My mother's cold cream massage. My mother is more sad than anyone else that the cold cream she has been using since she was in high school is discontinued. I realized the importance of skin care from my mother, who has beautiful skin, who massages her skin with cold cream every morning and evening.
Q. When did you first start thinking about using this magical tea as a cosmetic ingredient?
Three years ago, my attending physician, a Korean medicine doctor, opened a bio-new material research lab. To put it simply, it was a Korean medicine ingredient research lab. At that time, I jokingly told the director, “There must be an ingredient that is good for the skin in the stress, anger, and insomnia treatments you prescribed for me. If that ingredient is discovered, you must partner with me.” He contacted me shortly after. He said that what I said was true. Out of the three years I spent preparing for the cosmetics business, only one year was spent on design work. I devoted the next two years to patenting the ingredient. I did not do any animal testing. The process of clinically testing the ingredient on artificial skin, also known as “3D skin,” was difficult, but I have no regrets.
Q. There are already quite a few beauty brands that are promoting oriental medicine.
So I focused on how to express it in a modern language. The ultimate goal of 'Es Library' is to go beyond a simple cosmetics brand and establish itself as a lifestyle. In order to do that, the space must follow. This is an approach that is possible for me as the brand representative, an interior designer. Interior design also involves scenario work. So when I organize a space, I don't just create a beautiful space, but I imagine the person living there and draw a picture. Any furniture, fixtures, scents, and music are added to create a beautiful space where a person stands. Lighting is also essential. I believe that people who use herbal cosmetics can be young and humorous enough. That's why I released bags, scented candles, and soap stands in addition to cosmetics.
Q. What does ‘Is’ in ‘Is Library’ mean?
In Chinese, it means meaning, thought. Although it is not used now, in Old English, it is also interpreted as easy and smooth. The word 'Eas' is a creation that I discovered by chance. After much thought, I started by asking what kind of value this cosmetic product would deliver to customers and organized the keywords. It would be innovative (Evolutionary) and effective (Effective), then achievement (Achievement), and at the base of all these actions, tradition (Traditional) and transformation (Transformation) would breathe. Lastly, heritage (Heritage) and healthy (Healthy). The first letters of these words are taken to create 'EATH'.
Q. Opinions on the unique scent of oriental medicine may vary.
I thought about adding cinnamon or mint to soften the scent, but the director strongly opposed it, saying that cold ingredients can have adverse effects on the skin. Suddenly, I thought that it was ironic to add fragrance to cover up the original scent. Since these good ingredients were collected through distillation, it was natural for them to have a scent, so there was no reason to hide it. That's why I came to the conclusion that 'let's focus on the essence.'
Q. What kind of people do you want to become customers of the IS Library?
Everyone who wants to have a beautiful lifestyle. Those who want to achieve a balance in life as much as beautiful skin are the best. I think that a beautiful person is completed by eating carefully prepared, high-quality food, seeing beautiful things, and enjoying a good space. Those who want to find the value of these things, and those who feel the value and enjoy it are the Is Librarians.
Q. Last question. What is your first beauty memory?
My mother's cold cream massage. My mother is more sad than anyone else that the cold cream she has been using since she was in high school is discontinued. I realized the importance of skin care from my mother, who has beautiful skin, who massages her skin with cold cream every morning and evening.
